Dr. Irfan Shahzad
Scholar September 10, 2023 at 12:37 amTo qualify a thing to be harm needs to fulfill five criteria as mentioned in the Quran: 7: 33.
Say: My Lord has only forbidden lewd acts, whether open or hidden and usurping rights and wrongful oppression [339] and that you associate with God that for which He did not send down any sanction and that you fabricate something about God that you know not.
The prophet might have discouraged it owing to it being practiced by women to deceive men (usurpation as indicated above in the verse) to increase their mehr (dowry) because more Mehr was demanded for a more beautiful woman.
If no deception is intended and this is used just to add beauty, then there is no harm. It is then accepted as another way of beautification.

Member September 10, 2023 at 1:04 pmThe word “الاثم”
You have translated/cited “usurping rights” in the above verse. However, if we read the other translations of Quran the word used is “Sin” instead of “usurping rights” for the same like below.
Say, “My Lord has only forbidden immoralities – what is apparent of them and what is concealed – and sin, and oppression without right, and that you associate with Allah that for which He has not sent down authority, and that you say about Allah that which you do not know.”
If we consider الاثم as Sin the it encompasses a broader spectrum.
