Ahadith are not necessary to understand the Quran. However, they are read in the light of the Quran to find some explanation and applications of the Quran in them. To understand the Quran, one needs to learn the historical background of the Quran and its different addresses, etc.

This book by Dr Shehzad Saleem can help you.

Historical background and addresses can be excerpted from Hadith or not?

Yes, they can be. Historical background usually comes through collective reporting (ijamar and tawatur), individual reporting or hadith may mention a part of it.
