Israeliyat primarily indicates traditions and materials dealing with cosmogony, patriarchs and prophets, which are reputedly of Jewish origin. The scholars usually distinguish three kinds of the israeliyat:
– Those known to be true because the revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (SWS) confirms them.
– Those known to be false, because the revelation to the Prophet Muhammad (SWS) rejects them.
– Those not known to be true or false, and we do not say they are true or false.
It is of little consequence whether Wahb Ibn Munabbih, Kaab al-Ahbar, Abdullah Ibn Salam or anyone else is narrating the israeliyat material from them or anyone else since the same set of rules applies to everyone narrating such traditions. It does not exclude even Ibn-e-Abbas who also had transmitted israeliyat traditions through Wahb, Kaab and others.
As far as Quran is concerned, its understanding does not depend on such Israeli traditions.
