There is no concept of 12 imams in Quran. It is totally alien to Quran and purely a man-made concept, having no authorization of God. Quran is the final and complete revelation of God, and it does not ask us to follow any imams after the Holy Prophet PBUH.

Quran has only directed us to obey Allah and the honorable Prophet Muhammad PBUH. It asks us to follow his each and every command unconditionally (3:31), and believe in the book given to him that he delivered to us (47:2).

Quran has also taught us to follow the best example of Prophet Abraham (60:4), as he was a staunch follower of monotheism.

Besides these two Prophets, Quran has not commanded us to follow anyone else. But it stresses again and again to seek guidance from Quran in every matter, and judge all matters by the teachings of Scripture alone (5:44, 5:45, 5:47, 6:114, 16:89).

It is however worth mentioning that all the Prophets mentioned in Quran are also worth following, as their stories have great lessons for us, and God has endorsed them regarding their strong character, wisdom, patience and perseverance. For example:

    * Prophet Yousuf’s story narrated in Quran gives us an example of how to resist temptation, and how to efficiently and wisely govern and administer state affairs.

    * Prophet Ayyub’s story teaches us how to patiently bear trials and difficulties with patience and without complain.

    * Prophet Noah’s story is also a lesson in perseverence and how to focus on our goal against all odds and challenges.

    * Prophet Moses’ story teaches us how to challenge a tyrant authority with courage and how to take a stand on principles.

    * Prophet Yaqub teaches us how to endure extreme anguish and personal loss with hope and patience.

Moreover, we can also follow Luqman in how to do good parenting and how and what to train our children in.

All these personalities and their examples are narrated to us by God for a purpose, so that we can follow them, replicate their examples and pattern our lives after them.
