There is no problem in asking others to pray for one. It is a kind of request to God in the favour or a person. God has asked us to pray for the prophet by asking to send His blessings upon him. We pray to God in our prayer that peace be upon the pious people, and may God forgive them. The same is the case with praying for the dead. It is a request to God to forgive them. God decides according to His knowledge but our well wishing a sign of kindness, which is appreciable.

However demanding or paying monetary benefits for praying is unethical. It should be discouraged. No one is given a status that his prayer for someone will definitely be granted.
