Can ustad ghamdi please advice if there is any guidance on who should lead (imamat) salat in a mosque. Can a sixteen year old lead imamat oftenly just because he is hafiz quran , although there are bunch of elders present at that moment. Can you please advice any references to quran, hadees and fiqha.

Every Muslim is entitled to lead a prayer. There is no restriction like that in the presence of superiors the juniors cannot lead. The prophet himself said his prayers behind some of his companions and we know that the no is superior to the prophet.

Thank you for clarifying. So according to my previous understanding and now what you advised, I think I can say, that , there is no preference of any kind, superiority of (islamic) education, islamic getup, morality, social status and even age, in leading imamat in salat. And even for that mater gender as well, right ?

To be superior is knowledge or character makes one more deserving to be a leader, but it is not a condition. There is no Islamic getup in Deen.

I did not understand this part of the question: “And even for that mater gender as well, right”

I want to clarify myself here. So far I understood from what you saying is that, there are no conditions to do imamat of salat but there can be preferences to be imam. So does that mean that, the word “imam” in salat means , the same way as a “leader” that we understand it in our social context?

When it comes to practical applications, weather it is a designated imam in mosque or at some occasions where anyone from the available people has to lead the prayers, it seems that it is always someone who can skilfully syncronize prayers of the people betterly, weather it is a volunteer or is chosen , either paid or unpaid? I have no problem with this but if this is the case. Rather it seems to me more practical.

But If this is not the case, and an imam should have other preferences , like a leader of the group, than all our practical application of imamat seems to be deviations. So in context of my specific question, that, a sixteen year old boy, though he is hafiz quran, in prsence of elders can not lead imamat because none of these people will actually make him their leader in their any social matters. It is like we all do in our social rituals for example , namaz janaza, nikah etc, we always choose mullah to do it but we are not prepared to make mullah our leader in social matters. So your guidance is highly desirable here. I hope I have made my point clear.

There is no conditions in Deen to make someone leader of prayer who can be a leader in our social or political matter.

We follow people in different fields of life according to their relevant qualifications. A young doctor’s advice is preferred to uneducated opinion of an elder.

We cannot not invent conditions when seen didn’t specify them. When we have choice to appoint an Imam we just make sure to get a more qualified one. This is common sense not required by Deen.

Correction: “when Deen did not specify it”
