Dear sir is it permissible in Islam to buy stocks and then sell for benefit.

This question has come up because I heard that in Quran the verse in which it is ordered “not to eat riba” actually the order is for money which you earn without any work or effort. The speaker says that “for the same reason asking for dowry at the time of wedding is also prohibited because this is a money which the asker gets without working

Earning without effort is not forbidden. Inheritance, for instance, is a halal form of wealth, where one receives assets without exertion. Similarly, earning profit through investment is permissible and does not constitute Riba. Riba, by definition, involves charging additional money on a loan. Investing in stocks is allowed as long as the investment is in assets that are not considered haram in Islam.
