Is there a specific criteria to judge if someone is deserving of charity money or Zakat. I have heard something about Zakat that only a person with less than certain amount of assets can be given Zakat.

Please let me know if there are any specific criteria to judge who is deserving of charity and Zakat.

Any person in need is eligible to receive Zakat.

According to our Fuqaha, a person whose assets equal or exceed the Nisab threshold cannot receive Zakat. However, this is incorrect. It is the savings that determine Nisab, while assets such as a house, car, or savings for immediate needs are used to meet everyday requirements.

Thank you Dr. Irfan. What is the amount of savings that disqualify a person from receiving charity or Zakat?

Does this rule apply to both Zakat and charity?

A person whose needs are met through their own resources is not eligible to receive Zakat. Legally, anyone who has savings equal to the Nisab threshold is not entitled to Zakat. The same rule applies to charity. However, one can still give gifts to others, which is a virtuous act that earns the pleasure of God.
