What Quran actually is? Ghamidi Sahab says the Quran was revealed for the Arabs of that time. One of my non-Muslim friends also asked me why the Quran has many basic things that don’t seem necessary to say in today’s world. I told him it was revealed according to the situation of that time. Then he asked, ‘Why are you still applying it today if it was for that time? And why do you call it universal?’ I gave him the answer that felt right to me, saying that although it was revealed for that time, we always use context. Not everything was just for that moment—some things are universal truths. Was my answer correct? When people point out verses related to war, we say they were for that specific context and time. So what’s the concept here? How much of the Quran is universal and timeless, and how much isn’t? And why were some things kept in the Quran if they were only for that time? Why are we told about them?

There are four types of laws in quran. One is specific to the time of the prophet. For example, the Muslims were asked to make charity before coming to the prophet but later this restriction was removed. Still it is mentioned in the Qur’an.

Also, The laws specific to the children of Ibrahim that is bani Israel and bani Ishmael. They were promised to rise to dominate the nations against them. They were asked to address the whole world to preach religion, if they don’t they will suffer.

Second, the laws and instructions with causes. If these causes are present in other situations the laws and instructions will apply further. For example, the law of inheritance. It suggests that the daughter should get half the share of the boys. It is because their benefit shifts it the in laws. And boys are supposed to take care of their parents. This is generally happens. Unless this situation persist the law will be applicable.

Third, preemptive measure. For example, making two women witness in monetary dealings. If the situation demands the the preemptive measure is not more required or some alternative is provided, the specific preemptive measure suggested by Qur’an is not insisted.

Fourth, the forms if worship, which God chose for us. This is God’s choice and cannot be altered. God himself told the alternative forms of them in different situations.
