  • Valid Timings Of Isha Prayer

Posted by Zakir Hossain on October 12, 2024 at 1:29 pm

According to Sahi Muslim (612a) it can be offered till half of the night has passed.
According to Sunan Abi Dawood (Book 2 Hadith 393) Jibrail AS taught prayers to our Prophet Muhammad SAW, mentioning timings of different prayers, including Isha which started from the ending of Twilight till a third of the night had passed.
As both the Hadiths are classified as Sahih/Hasan, which of these should be followed or preferred? Secondly, can Isha prayers be offered upto the beginning of Fajr time?

The word Isha refers to the first half of the night. After that Tahajjud prayer time starts.

The words in the Hadith of Abu Dawud are

وصلى بي العشاء حين غاب الشفق

It means when Twilight faded. there is no mention of ‘one-third of the night’ here.

    Please check it once again.
In the Hadith on the first day “… he (Jibrail AS) prayed the night prayer with me when the twilight had ended”. On the following day “…he prayed the night prayer with me when about the third of the night had passed”. “Then turning to me he said: Muhammad, this is the time observed by the prophets before you, and the time is anywhere between two times”.
