  • Permissiblity & Limitation Of Prizes & Rewards With Competition

Posted by Jahanzaib on October 16, 2024 at 6:56 pm

Words of the Prophet (PBUH): “There should be no (money) prizes for competitions except in archery, camel-racing and horse-racing.” (Narrated by At-Tirmidhi, 1700 and Abu Dawud, 2574. Classed as authentic by Al-Albani.)

Is the context here 1) settin limits & permissiblity of prizes from bettin as in permissible gamble/wager between 2 or more players only in certain situation aka horse-racin, camel racin & archery.

    2) only talkin about prizes when competition set by a 3rd party prize/reward system who are non participant in the competition nor requirin entryfree for the players aka not Gambling but limited this to only horse-racin, camel racin & archery.

    3) both

If we go 1 it’s understandable but going by 2 or 3 context would basically make almost every type of competitive game beside the 3 above with skill based reward system even if it’s not gambling impermissible.

Which/what is the correct understanding here?

For something to be declared prohibited, there must be an ethical or moral objection to it.

This hadith addresses gambling, not merely rewards. When an outside party or a third party places a bet, it constitutes gambling. However, if the condition is that the winner receives a reward, it does not fall under the definition of gambling and is therefore permissible.

Got it, lastly was the wording …except in archery, camel-racing and horse-racing.

in this hadith givin us an exception to the no betting/wager rule as in bein allow only in these instances between the competitors themselves?

The scholars of the Standing Committee said “It is not permissible to bet money except on the activities excluded by the Sharee‘ah in this regard, which are horse or camel racing and archery”

Three traditions are recorded in the book “Al-Wafi” from Imam Ja’far as-Sadiq (a.s.) which state that except for horse racing and archery whenever a game is played for stakes, the angels are infuriated and curse the people who lay the bet.

do u agreed with this? If not what was other the purpose of this statement, is there more context to it?
