Three Kinds Of Judges & Taqlid
Assalamualaikum
There’s a hadith which I’m pasting below :
Buraydah reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The judges are three kinds: two judges are in Hellfire and one judge is in Paradise. A man who judges without the truth while he knows it, he is in Hellfire. A judge who has no knowledge and violates the rights of people, he is in Hellfire. A judge who judges with the truth, he is in Paradise.”

عَنْ بُرَيْدَة أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَالَ الْقُضَاةُ ثَلَاثَةٌ قَاضِيَانِ فِي النَّارِ وَقَاضٍ فِي الْجَنَّةِ رَجُلٌ قَضَى بِغَيْرِ الْحَقِّ فَعَلِمَ ذَاكَ فَذَاكَ فِي النَّارِ وَقَاضٍ لَا يَعْلَمُ فَأَهْلَكَ حُقُوقَ النَّاسِ فَهُوَ فِي النَّارِ وَقَاضٍ قَضَى بِالْحَقِّ فَذَلِكَ فِي الْجَنَّةِ

My question is , does this hadith talk only about those who occupy the office of a judge ( Qadi) or anyone who’s “judging” on a matter that comes up in his everyday life like determining which position to take on an Islamic question based on which argument makes more sense to you and you feel is more in accordance with Islam. For example, I read somewhere that taqlid is compulsory because if you’re not practicing taqlid, you become a judge who’s judging without knowledge and as such you’re in the Fire and that the hadith about ijtihad is related only to qualified mujtahidin and not laymen.
