Difference In Requirements For Repentance Of Wealth Earned By Doing Haram
In Islam, if I commit a personal sin like Zina, it is clearly haram, and I understand that sincere repentance requires asking Allah for forgiveness, feeling regret, and being determined not to return to the sin. Now, suppose someone gives me an item, like a chair, in exchange for this sin . I understand that using this item is also impermissible because it’s associated with haram earnings. But if I don’t use this chair and instead dump it in storage, hidden away without intending ever to use it, why is it said that my repentance isn’t fully complete or acceptable until I get rid of the chair as well?
If I’m not using the chair, then I’m not directly engaging in haram, so why is my repentance tied to disposing of this item? If this is based on the idea that “any outcomes of a sin must be undone to complete repentance,” does this principle apply to personal sins as well, even when they don’t involve violating others’ rights or usurping anything from others? while this principle is understandable and known in case of sins related to people, and it caused then deprivation of right or a harm. so it needs to be compensated. but will it relate to personal sins too?
For example, in contrast, if I lie to my brother about exercising for two hours to make him happy, and later feel regret for lying, I’m told that repentance only requires me to ask Allah for forgiveness and refrain from lying again. I don’t need to go back and tell my brother the truth, as it doesn’t harm him or violate his rights in any way.
My questions, therefore, are:
– Is the principle of “reversing the effects” a requirement for repentance from personal sins, even when there’s no harm done or rights violated?
– Could you help me understand why “getting rid of the haram chair” is considered essential for my repentance from Zina to be complete? Even though I’m not using it and determined to not use it, and I’m determined not to commit Zina again as well, why is disposing of the item part of sincere repentance?”
