The Prophet pbuh said:
”The worst of your women are the ones who commit tabarruj. They are the hypocrites. None from them will enter paradise.”

Moderator November 20, 2024 at 6:00 amThis is classed Sahih by Shiekh Albani in his Silsila Ahadith-e-Sahiha 4/464-466 (Hadith Number 1849).
This is condemnation of women who intentionally show off their embellishments/adornments which were supposed to be covered in accordance with Quran Surah Nur where norms of Gender Interaction are mentioned.
Please see for details:
__
Word Tabarruj is used in Quran 33:33 in the context of Wives of the Prophet (sws) and following is the translation:
“Abide still in your homes and do not display your finery as women used to do in the days of jahiliyyah ( اگلی جاہلیت کی سی سج دھج نہ دکھاتی پھرو)”
(Excerpt from Quran 33:33)

Narrated Subaia bint Al-Harith:
That she was married to Sad bin Khaula who was from the tribe of Bani ‘Amr bin Luai, and was one of those who fought the Badr battle. He died while she wa pregnant during Hajjat-ul-Wada.’ Soon after his death, she gave birth to a child. When she completed the term of deliver (i.e. became clean), she prepared herself for suitors. Abu As-Sanabil bin Bu’kak, a man from the tribe of Bani Abd-ud-Dal called on her and said to her, “What! I see you dressed up for the people to ask you in marriage. Do you want to marry By Allah, you are not allowed to marry unless four months and ten days have elapsed (after your husband’s death).” Subai’a in her narration said, “When he (i.e. Abu As-Sanabil) said this to me. I put on my dress in the evening and went to Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) and asked him about this problem. He gave the verdict that I was free to marry as I had already given birth to my child and ordered me to marry if I wished.”

I have seen this narration mentioned in dr Mazhar yaseen siddique book & one of a scholar explaines that the women who dressed up for suitor was dressed like a bride ,or had bridal makeup of that time ( تَجَمَّلْتِ لِلْخُطَّابِ ) this word is defined as dressing up like bride according that scholar ! @Irfan76 correct me if iam wrong shykh

Scholar November 20, 2024 at 11:12 pmTabuurj means alluring men with extraordinary embellishment. A modest or decent woman doesn’t do that. This is spreading Fuhush and the punishment of Fuhush is azab e aleem, painful punishment. The hadith refers to the same.
Embellishment of hands and face is allowed to be exposed as they fall under the category of ‘exception’ which is allowed in the verse 24:31. This is about usual adornment.
However if face or hands are adorned with extraordinary make up for the purpose of Taburruj, it would be prohibited.
Party makeup is not taburrj. Taburruj is a makeup which for example a prostitute does to allure men.

Member November 21, 2024 at 12:13 amFor example the make up of a decent women is similar to that of a prostitute, like the face & hands ,as they are “exception”if her intention is just to look presentable even In front of men as seen in our gatherings ,while the other lady intend to seduce men, because of this varied intentions can both of them differ in ruling? More over the word “tabarruj” how can be defined as emballishment for alluring? I mean how we reached to this point that this word mean emballishment for sake of seduction not for general presentable appearance?

Member November 21, 2024 at 1:36 amJust for clarity like you mentioned party make up is not tabarruj similarly bridal make is not aswell? Since it is heavy make up but all brides get it done to look beautiful. Obviously not with the intention to allure/seduce men
And i have the same question as above that tabaruj includes the intention to seduce/allure men? As in niyat insan ki iska hisa hoti hai?

Scholar November 26, 2024 at 12:57 amIf a prostitute does the decent make, it does not make the make indecent but rather makes her look decent. Her intention sare with her.
The meaning of Taburruj in the dictionary:
إِظهارُ الزِّينَةِ وَمَا يُسْتَدْعَى بهِ شَهْوَةُ الرّجالِ (تاج العروس من جواهر القاموس (5/ 417)
زینت کا اظہار کرنا جس سے مردوں میں شہوت اجاگر کرنا مقصود ہو۔

Member December 31, 2024 at 10:59 am@Irfan76 Sir what about the bridal makeup? The body is completely covered but still makeup is worn by every sister like waise bride! Is it comes under TABARRUJ?
2) More over if a lady comes before non mahrams relatives with makeup the look presentable is she fahisha?
3) hear prophet alaihisalam cursed by hell fire for tabarruj ,it is not actual zina here it became major sin as associated with punishment in hell but we thought means of zina consider minor where as zina is major sin ?
Please correct my understanding

Dr. Irfan Shahzad
Scholar December 31, 2024 at 11:40 pmWe know the difference between the make of a bride and that of a prostitute. The cultural and societal norms make the difference. Therefore bridal make is not considered Taburruj. However, Taburrage is intended to appeal to sex, therefore it is punishable.
