Assalamualaikum, could someone explain to me what this hadith means?

Narrated Abu Huraira: The people of the Scripture (Jews) used to recite the Torah in Hebrew and they used to explain it in Arabic to the Muslims. On that God’s Apostle said, “Do not believe the people of the Scripture or disbelieve them, but say: ‘We believe in God and what is revealed to us.’

The Jews would recount stories from their scriptures, which contained both truths and fabrications. The Prophet cautioned Muslims against accepting these narrations without discernment. For Muslims, the Quran stands as the ultimate truth. Consequently, scholars established a principle: whatever aligns with the Quran is accepted, and anything that contradicts it is rejected as fabrication or distortion.

    Thank you for your reply.

What about something from the Jewish scripture that the Qur’an neither affirms nor contradicts? Basically stuff in these books about which the Qur’an is silent? What kind of attitude should we have towards it?

They can be accepted or rejected on the basis of probability.
