When I read quran’s transaltion (only), I dont know the context behind the ayat or surah that I’m trying to understand. I dont know on what occasion it was said or to whom it is directed to. This hinders my understanding of the quran. Its difficult to find the ‘flow’ in the text if one is anware of the context. Ghamidi saab’s tarjuma provides a brief context of the surah but that is not enough as alot of the text of the Quran is answers from God in reponse to the questions asked. If one doesnt know the questions asked how can he/she find the answer relatable or even understand fully.

My question is : In order to understand quran, do I have to understand its historical background as well? How much does knowing arabic helps? and If the first question is true, how should one go about it.

You are advised to read seerah of the prophet and Tadabbur e Qur’an by Mawlana Islahi.

What book would you recommend on seerah plus this leads to another important question i.e :

Is Quranic text not enough for its understanding in and of itself. I mean in order to understand it fully does one have to go find explanations in other books?

This is not about explanation. It is about the historical background in which the Qur’an was revealed. A book revealed in a historical setting needs its reader to be already aware of the circumstances and the people, their norms and problems.
