If a sum of money is withheld by a friend or due to other circumstances, and I recover it after several years, am I required to pay Zakat on the amount only once upon receipt, or must I calculate and pay Zakat for each year it remained withheld?

You have to pay zakat once you receive the amount. You need not to pay zakat for the previous time, when the amount was not in your possession.

JazakAllah, Irfan Sahab. Could you provide any logic, daleel, or usool for your claim? I had a conversation about it with other scholars, and they had a contrary opinion.

It is a matter of Ijtihad, therefore opinions are different. To me, the loan is not in your possession, therefore it does not incur Zakat, the loan is already serving a good in the possession of another person.

Moreover, the receiving of the loan amount is somewhat uncertain, an element of uncertainty cannot ignored. And we know that God has said that He does not want hardship in religion, therefore we choose the easy option.

You can choose any opinion which you find more statisfactory.
