Witr Procedure
Posted by Abid Kidwai on January 19, 2025 at 8:44 amKindly elucidate in regards to the Witr prayer that whether the three rakaah being prayed (if one chooses to pray three instead of five or seven and so on), do we have to say tashahud and taslim after the nafl prayer and then pray one rakah singularly to make it odd or can one pray all three together and say tashahud and taslim at the end.
I suspect that it cannot be prayed like Maghrib prayer?

Albeit, my question remains unanswered to the extent that I enquired about the validity of the Witr prayer in which, if one is praying three rakah, all three are prayed together without tashahud or taslim in the second rakah but saying it in the last rakah and ending all three rakaah together because of the hadith of ‘Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) who said: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used not to say the tasleem in the (first) two rak’ahs of Witr. According to another version: “He used to pray Witr with three rak’ahs and he did not sit except in the last of them.” (Narrated by al-Nasai, 3/234; al-Bayhaqi, 3/31. al-Nawawi said in al-Majmu’ (4/7): it was narrated by al-Nasai with a hasan isnad, and by al-Bayhaqi with a sahih isnad.) The same rule is iterated for five rakaah in Muslim, 737.

As per the verbal or practical corroboration of the Prophet (sws), the various ways in which this prayer (Tahajjud Salah) was offered are the following:
1. After offering the prayer in groups of two rakat, it should be ended with the salam, and then one more rakat should be offered as witr.

2. After offering the prayer in groups of two rakat, it should be ended with the salam, and then five rakat should be offered in a manner that one does qadah in the last rakat only.

3. After offering the prayer in groups of four rakat, it should be ended with the salam, and then three rakat should be offered consecutively with the qadah being done only in the last rakat and then the salam should be said.

4. After consecutively praying two, four, six or eight rakat without the qadah, which should be done in the last rakat, one rakat should be offered standing up after the qadah without saying the salam and then after the qadah the salam should be said.

Are you saying that the methodology of witr Salah that I mentioned in my question are valid and the different methods that you have listed also hold water?
Or, only the ones that you have mentioned are valid?
