    This is in the light of the instruction of Reconciliation of Hearts (مؤلفۃ القلوب) See 9: 60. There had been enmity between them and the Muslims, in this way the prophet welcomed them by giving that good gesture.

    But doesn’t the verse use ‘sadaqat’ (zakat), so how does this apply to war booty?

    This is an inference from the verse: if Sadaqah can be given to them, then war booty may also be givento them.
