As per my understanding, Muslims are allowed to visit hindu temples, but we are not allowed to fold our hands or bow in front of idols. If someone asks us to remove our shoes before entering the temple, can we remove the shoes, as it is most common practice in Hindu temples?

To respect others sacred places is a gesture of civility. It is not considered shirk. However one needs to avoid the actions and rituals of shirk.

Yes. This is not considered an act of shirk. It is to respect the feelings of others.
