  • Sehri Time According To Qur'An

Posted by Basheer Ahmed on February 27, 2025 at 11:52 am

In Qur’an, Surah Al-Baqarah verse 187, Allah says,

“And eat and drink until the white thread of dawn becomes distinct to you from the black thread [of night].”

According to Science, the process of dawn is divided into a few steps such as Astronomical dawn, Nautical dawn, Civil dawn and Sun rise. What exactly the time is according to these steps, which matches the order mentioned in the Quran?

    Thank you.

When the dawn appears on the horizon, it is the time. This time is measured by the experts and indicated in the calenders. This is before sunrise. This is the time when the time of Fajr prayer starts.

Respected Dr. Irfan Shahzad, please take a look at the hadith below:

      Sahih Muslim 1094 b

Samura b. Jundub reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) as saying:

The Adhan of Bilal should not mislead you nor the whiteness (of the pillar) of dawn, for it is not the whiteness of the true dawn, but that of the false dawn which is vertical like a pillar and you can eat food till the streaks of whiteness spread like it.

      1) Keeping in view the hadith, could you please differentiate the False Dawn and True Dawn terms mentioned in the hadith?

And in the earlier response, you said that the time, indicated in the calendars for Ramadan, is measured by experts. So the time of Sehri in Karachi for the first Roza in Pakistan in 2025 is 5:37 am (according to the time table shown by The Express Tribune).

      2) Do you think that this time of Sehri mentioned above is EXACTLY according to the Hadiths and Qur’an?

      Thank you.

There are two kinds of dawn. First appears the false dawn. It is a light which disappears after a while and darkness again prevails. This is not the actual dawn. The hadith says that if muazzin mistakenly say azan at the first dawn one should keep eating till the actual dawn.

The calender of Ramadan timing is reliable and endorsed by the scholars.

Brother Dr. Irfan Shahzad sahib, I think I am unable to grasp the crux of your response completely right now, that’s why my confusion regarding the questions I have asked is the same yet. But I appreciate the way you respond.

Nonetheless, here comes another question in my mind: as you said that “the hadith says that if muazzin mistakenly say azan at the first dawn”. There is another hadith mentioning the reason of that azan at first dawn:

      Sahih Muslim 1093 c
“This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sulaiman Taimi with the same chain of transmitters and, at the end, it was said that the first Adhan was meant to awaken those who were in slumber amongst them and in order to make them turn who stand in (prayer) among them (towards food at the commencement of the fast). Jarir (one of the narrators) said that the Messenger (ﷺ) did not say like this but he said like it (true dawn) that the streaks of (true dawn ) are horizontal and not vertical.”

Was it really by a mistake or with a proper reason?

    My mistake.

the hadith clearly mentions that the first azan was delivered at the first dawn or false dawn that is not the dawn which ends the sehri time for eating. So people can keep eating and drinking. When the second dawn appeared the second azan was delivered for prayer.

Respected sir Dr. Irfan Shahzad, one last question I have in this regard to clarify the confusion in my mind. That is:

When a muazzin says Azaan for example now a days in Ramazan ( which is generally considered as “the end of Sehri”) , is it allowed for a muslim to offer prayer immediately after the Azaan?

      Thank you.

Azan is supposed to be delivered when the time of the prayer comes. if time is there, you can offer prayer, no matter whether Azan is delivered or not.

In our country, there is a practice that Azan of Fajr is delivered a little earlier before its appointed time during Ramzan to make people keep fast within the time because our people wrongfully associated the end time of Sehri with Azan. So, if Azan is delivered before its appointed time, you cannot offer fajr prayer, unless its actual time comes.

Dr. Irfan Shahzad brother thank you very much.

Could you clarify the remaining confusion in my mind, please.

“and eat and drink until the white thread (light) of dawn appears to you distinct from the black thread (darkness of night), then complete your Sawm (fast) till the nightfall.” (al-Baqarah 2:187)

In my opinion, as well as according to my observation, the current time of Sehri in the calendars doesn’t fit best for the above verse in the Quran. The ruling mentioned in the above verse is for ordinary people. As far as the verse is concerned, there is difference of at least approximately 25 minutes between observation of the signs of the “distinction of white thread from the dark thread” and the current time mentioned in the calendars. I can see clearly the horizon, and I can see that it’s still night at the current time for sehri in the calendars. Am I supposed to stick to the calendars ANYHOW?

The calender is made by the aeronautical experts and endorsed by the scholars. It is a collective effort and therefore more reliable than that of an individual whose observation is can be marred by the urban environment.
