  • Authenticity Of Chillah And Remaining In Seclusion From Family

I have often heard that people go for ‘Chillah’ in groups remaining in seclusion for 40 days and beyond, leaving behind their families. I would like to know whether such practices are as per the principles of Quran and authentic Sunnah.

Secondly, in some posts I have read that our Prophet SAW also used to go into seclusion in Ghare e Hira before his appointment as a Prophet. What is the purpose of such practice? Does Islam encourages the same?

For this purpose the ietikaaf in the month of Ramzan is introduced. In addition to it, one can avail this opportunity in Tahajjud prayer. But there is no concept of collective seclusion or group seclusion.

Seclusion is a practice and an integral part of asceticism. Does Islam encourage the same? What is that which is achieved by seclusion and not by our attachment to Allah through various practices viz. Salat, Sawm, Charity etc. enjoined upon us?
Secondly, in the Hadith by Ibn Hisham, on the first revelation, it is mentioned that our Prophet SAW used to go to the Ghar e Hira for I’tekaf during the month of Ramadhan along with his family members and it was during one such occasion when he received the first revelation. But you have mentioned that there is no concept of group seclusion. Please clarify

Islam indicates the moderate ways to worship God. Seclusion is beneficial but it turned into asceticism. Islam introduced seclusion for a brief person of time and did not make it obligatory.

People may group up for seclusion but there is no directive for that. The prophet used to go to the cave of Hira with family before the prophethood.

Thanks for the clarification. Just for enrichment of some knowledge in this regard, could you please elaborate when was seclusion introduced in Islam and for how much period was it in vogue. Secondly, please do provide the source of this information.

Ten days of the ietikaaf in the last ten days of Ramzan has been initiated by the prophet and it is a well established practice.
