Entry Fee And Prize Money For Skill-Based Game
Asalamualaikum,
Is it permissible to play a game like pool/billiards for the purpose of winning prize money? Let’s say both participants contribute $5 a piece and the winning total is $10. Would this constitute gambling at all?

It is not gambling. Gambling is a game of guess and chance. The sports needs efforts and skill to win.

With great respect. this scenario would be considered gambling because it involves:
1. A wager – Each player contributes money ($5 each).
2. An uncertain outcome – The result depends on who wins the game.
3. A prize – The winner takes the total ($10).

These do not constitute something to be gambling. Contributing is not something immoral or unethical. Uncertain result is not a problem. Trade too involves uncertainty. There is nothing wrong with prizes. It is only the guess work which makes something gambling. Competition on the other hand is a lawful activity which rewards the winner for his effort.

But like what if i challenge someone to play 1v1 match of chess to see who’s better at it, and we both contribute to money and winner takes all. this seems like a competition, but can you clarify when does this becomes a bet?

Chess needs effort and skill to win. It is not gambling. It cannot become gambling. Gambling is what you see in a TV Program, Jeeto, Pakistan, where you throw randomly at something to find a prize. But if you make it a target to hit with a particular set of skills, then it is not gambling. Gambling is guesswork or pure chance.
