Questioning The Nature Of God, Creation, And Alternative Explanations
Hey everyone,
I want to share something that’s been on my mind lately. Let me preface this by saying I have strong faith, I am a practicing Muslim, and I have never seriously doubted my belief in God. However, recently, these thoughts have been hitting me randomly—often in the middle of the night—about God’s existence, purpose, and the nature of our reality.
I used to laugh at atheist arguments and thought their reasoning was weak. I was a hardcore, unquestioning Muslim, fully convinced of my beliefs. But over time, I have found myself becoming somewhat more open-minded and progressive, trying to understand perspectives beyond what I was raised with. This shift hasn’t made me lose faith, but it has made me ask deeper questions about what I truly believe.
At this point, I desperately want to understand God and His universe. I keep thinking about how Ghazali described his journey—how reality “opened up” to him, and he found certainty. I want that certainty too. I want to know that I am not blindly following something, that I am not worshiping the wrong concept of God.
Here are some of the biggest questions that have been bothering me:
1. Does God Exist, and If So, Why Doesn’t He Need a Creator? What Was God Doing Before Creation?
-
If everything in the universe has a cause, why is God the exception? I understand the argument that God is eternal, but how do we prove that logically? What makes God different from an eternal universe or another uncaused force?
-
If God has existed eternally, what was he doing before he created everything?
-
Was there a moment where He decided to create, and if so, why?
-
If God is self-sufficient, why did he even create us? Why didn’t he live alone peacefully? Was he bored or something? He created
2. Why Did God Create Us If He Gains Nothing from It?
-
If we worship him, it doesn’t benefit him; if we reject him, it doesn’t harm him—so why is it so important? If he is all-powerful and independent, why does it matter if we believe or not
-
Whenever I read Quran, I see both mercy and extreme warnings. There are so many verses about destroyed nations, hellfire, divine punishment—why is fear such a big part of the message? Is this just a method to control people, or is there a deeper meaning?
-
So why created us??? He created so many different species (angels, jins, humans, animals), and connected them with each other (angels bring messages, take souls, human eat animals etc), created a world where there is so much chaos etc. So what is the end game? what will he gain? what will happen after the day of judgement? Will he take a retirement or will he then create another universe and repeat the experiment? He doesn’t even give us option to die eternally. Maybe we don’t want heaven, we just want to sleep peacefully and never wake up. He was alone and bored in this universe why didn’t he create a goddess for himself instead of putting us through this test?

Sometimes it feels like God is more like a mad king with so much power and ego and wants everyone to worship him.
Alternative Theory: What If Aliens Created Us Instead of God?
-
What if we were created by an advanced alien race that is playing a cosmic game with us?
-
Maybe different alien factions sent different prophets, which is why religions differ.
-
Maybe they are using us as entertainment, like a video game, and rewarding/punishing us as part of their simulation. This explains why these aliens doesn’t care about suffering and they are willing power/threats to meet their objectives because they are doing this for entertainment and not for some noble cause.
-
Maybe the real God either doesn’t exist or doesn’t interact with us, and the only ones shaping human history are these beings.
-
What makes the concept of God superior to the alien creator hypothesis?
-
This also explains why the universe is so messy and inconsistent?
-
Why are some people born into privilege while others suffer?
-
Why do natural disasters, cosmic collisions, and birth defects exist?
-
If the universe is designed, why does it contain imperfections?
-
I am not losing my faith, but I want clarity. I wish reality would open up to me like it did for Ghazali. I don’t just want to believe in God blindly—I want to understand him and worship the true God, not an incorrect concept of Him.
I would love to hear thoughts from progressive Muslims, philosophers, and anyone who has wrestled with similar questions. How do you personally reconcile these issues?
