Let’s say in 20 years the reading of Qaloon becomes tawatur and the most popular reading in the world, what would that do to qirat al ammah? Would hafs reading no longer be qirat al ammah but Qaloon as it’s tawatur? How would we then know if Qaloon or Hafs goes back to the prophet….

Qirat Ammah has been recorded in the history as a historical fact. Any change now doesn’t make a difference.

How do you know that qiraat al ammah never used to be Qaloon and only later hafs got popular?

Qirat Ammah, the name itself suggests that it has been a public Qirat, Muslims everywhere follow it, and all Tafseer literature is based on it. Every Hafiz, scholar, and common Muslim follows it. Other Qirat could never accepted as Aam. They were known to only a few Qari and scholars.

There is no evidence that what is taught in the name of Hafs, got popular at any point in time, and before it, there were differences. There is no evidence that the consensus on Qirat developed later.
