  • Hadith On Umar (RA) Following Sauda (RA) & Revelation Of The Hijab Verse

There is a hadith that says Hazrat Umar (RA) wanted Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) to veil his wives but he did not. So one night when one of the wives went out he told her that he can recognise her, and then Allah (SWT) revealed the hijab verse.

    Narrated Aisha:
The wives of the Prophet (ﷺ) used to go to Al-Manasi, a vast open place (near Baqi at Medina) to answer the call of nature at night. Umar used to say to the Prophet (ﷺ) “Let your wives be veiled,” but Allah’s Apostle did not do so. One night Sauda bint Zam’a the wife of the Prophet (ﷺ) went out at Isha’ time and she was a tall lady. Umar addressed her and said, “I have recognized you, O Sauda.” He said so, as he desired eagerly that the verses of Al-Hijab (the observing of veils by the Muslim women) may be revealed. So Allah revealed the verses of “Al-Hijab” (A complete body cover excluding the eyes).

    Another version:

    Narrated Aisha:
Sauda (the wife of the Prophet) went out to answer the call of nature after it was made obligatory (for all the Muslims ladies) to observe the veil. She had a large frame and everybody who knew her before could recognize her. So Umar bin Al-Khattab saw her and said, “O Sauda! By Allah, you cannot hide yourself from us, so think of a way by which you should not be recognized on going out. Sauda returned while Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) was in my house taking his supper and a bone covered with meat was in his hand. She entered and said, “O Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ)! I went out to answer the call of nature and Umar said to me so-and-so.” Then Allah inspired him (the Prophet) and when the state of inspiration was over and the bone was still in his hand as he had not put in down, he said (to Sauda), “You (women) have been allowed to go out for your needs.”

This narration also comes in Sahih Muslim

What is Ghamidi Sahib’s take on this narration? As it says the Prophet (PBUH) didn’t initially want to veil his wives but the verse came down because of Hazrat UMAR (RA)’s actions.
Also, which Hijab verse is this hadith talking about? 24:31, 33:33, 33:53 or 33:59?

The circumstances the prophet and his family was going through were problematic. Surah Ahzad depicts how hypocrites were looking for opportunities to make scandals of the prophet’s family and they did make two. One about Hazrat Ayesha and the second is about the marriage of the holy prophet with Zainab who was divorced by his adopted son Zaid. Those culprits used to tease and tried to talk the women going out at night to answer the call of nature.

In that situation Umar suggested the prophet to make her wives sit in Hijab which means that no one should see them. The incident of Sauda indicated the same. He told her that she was recognisable among the party of women going to answer the call of nature at night. If she was recognisable, the culprits had chance to make a scandal of her.

The verses regarding hijab didn’t reveal in answer to Uamr’s suggestion. But they had to be revealed in those circumstances. Umar was thinking on the same line like any sane person would do in that situation.

Hijab of the prophet’s wife is discussed in

    33:32 and 53.

The mischievous attitude of the hypocrites is discussed right from the starry of the Surah. 33:59 onwards.
