    Assalamu Alaikum,

I recently came across scientific reports that suggest the potential presence of dimethyl sulfide (DMS) on the exoplanet K2-18b, a gas known to be produced by marine life on Earth. The confidence level reported is about 99.7%, which is highly significant.

Based on Ustadh Javed Ahmad Ghamidi’s understanding, it is said that there is no life in this universe beyond Earth, although he has mentioned that there are 7 similar universes (as per Qur’anic interpretation).

My question is: If this scientific discovery is confirmed, how should a believer approach this?

I ask this sincerely, in hopes of learning how Islam views such cosmic discoveries in the light of our faith.

    Jazakum Allahu Khairan.

The two gases — dimethyl sulfide, or DMS, and dimethyl disulfide, or DMDS — involved in Webb’s observations of the planet named K2-18 b are generated on Earth by living organisms, primarily microbial life such as marine phytoplankton — algae. These albeit living entity, are not in any way intelligent lifeforms like humans/angels/jinns. What Quran means by saying seven heaven and seven earth is that, each heaven contains an earth like planet (as in having intelligent lifeform, blessed with reasoning and free will). Also, this nuanced interpretation of the verse differs greatly amongst scholars, some say the number seven, signifies largeness/infinitude instead of a fixed quantity. Maududi (RA) also thinks that this could be seven different heaven and earth or seven imaginary bifurcations of our one universe.
