  • Does Reciting Durood Ibrahim In Salah Contradict Quran?

    Asalam Alaikum!

I am Shahab from Calcutta and my strict belief is that Deen got completed with the revelation of the Glorious Quran and after the demise of the Prophet, there was no scope of any addition or subtraction from the religion. As far as Hadiths go, all they can be is historical records whose veracity nobody can confirm nor do they have any role to play in the Deen of Rasool Allah.

    My question is:

Surah Al-Jinn, verse 72:18, states: “And that the places of worship are for Allah, so do not invoke anyone besides Him.”

This phrase ,”do not invike anyone beside him” reinforces the idea that worship should be directed solely towards Allah, and that invoking or seeking help from anyone else is not permissible.

So when we are praying Salah why would I even want to bring in Prophet Ibrahim and his family into it and Prophet Mohammed along with his family into it and seek mercy and blessing for them?

Isnt salah supposed to be a connection betweeb man and his Master, isnt salah supposed to be a complete submission to the Almighty so if all this is what it is supposed to be, then adding Durood Ibrahim is only succeeding in making the salah not just about the one who is praying and his Almighty God but also involving Ibrahim ,Mohammed and their families.

I am aware of Ghamidi sahab’s view that reading Durood Ibrahim in salah is not farz but mustahabb but why should salah seek blessing and mercy for revered Prophets abd their families when the Quran clearly asks not to invoke or involve)anyone beside Allah in prayer.

When Allah says don’t invoke anyone besides him, he means don’t ask from anyone except him. Durood e Ibrahim isn’t asking from Ibrahim A.S and Muhammad SWS, it is about asking Allah to grant Muhammad SWS the same extent of mercy and blessings that Allah gave to Ibrahim A.S.

Now there’s that. The history of how we started reciting Durood in our Salah as an obligatory part, has its own beautiful account. The prophet was approached by people who would ask him what should they supplicate in their prayer to acknowledge the mercy that Allah has bestowed upon them, through him. This, request sent prophet Muhammad into a dilemma and he hoped that such a question wasn’t asked, anyhow, after much insistence, he replied, if you must supplicate for me, do it in that way (Durood e Ibrahim), this was never compulsory. It is as same as we ask God to grant mercy and salvation to our parents.

As per essence, it is pretty amazing too. We start our Salah by reciting, Surah Fatiha, which is an ethereal supplication of sustained guidance, this was a gift for humanity, this gift was sent by Allah through the tongue of his last prophet. Since this gift was of such a value that it would help us attain salvation for the eternal afterlife, it was only befitting, we would appreciate this gift by supplicating for our prophet in the later part of our salah, who made this arrangement possible or was an intermediary in fulfilling this grant from God.

    Grateful for the reply.

I am aware that we are seeking mercy and blessings for the 2 Prophets and his family through Durood Ibrahim just as we may seek blessings for our parents which does not mean we are invoking anyone else other than Allah in our salah . Ghamidi sahab has clearly stated that we can ask Allah for all that we wish for and our desires during those phases of salah where we are praying in a muted way(ruku, sajdah, while sitting) but doesnt making Durood Ibrahim a compulsory part of every prayer as is the norm,a diversion from the real essence of offering salah.

We have the liberty to join any surah with Surah Fatiha at every rikaat but Durood Ibrahim which I presume isnt the word of Allah has become the unmissable part of every Salah and not reading it at all in a prayer would make most scholars declare our prayer as invalid.

If Hadiths, which as per Ghamidi sahab are not a part of Deen but rather historical recordings is the source of Durood Ibrahim then how did we make a prayer having no Quranic relation , an unmissable part of iour prayer? And what did the Muslims before Bukhari and Muslim’s source pray while sitting in salah?

Isnt Durood Ibrahim’s absolute usage in every salah not straying from the actual essence of salah which is totally about one’s absolute attendance infront of Allah?

I dont know if I am able to convey the whole aspect of my query but thanks.

That is what i said. Before the conversation that occurred between prophet Muhammad SWS and those believers, it is likely or understood that salah was performed without any durood. Durood or salutations for Prophet Muhammad isn’t an integral part of the salah, just like our scholars have pinpointed several duas in Qadah portion, durood e ibrahim was also included. The Qadah (where durood e ibrahim is recited) is the portion which is reserved for supplications, prophet Muhammad hasn’t specified any of supplications here, but would do so according to his own desires. He although has recommended some supplications.

To summarise, durood e ibrahim isn’t compulsory but optional, as is every other supplication in the Qadah. But i see no reason to avoid it, since sending salutations to Muhammad SWS is encouraged to us by Allah, and Durood e Ibrahim in its own is a miraculous blend of pure words and also has approval from Muhammad PBUH.
