I am a salaried person. However, most of may salary is used to run the household/ living expenses for my family. I also pay a nominal income tax. If I calculate 10% zakat every month, even after deduction of income tax, the amount is significant and if I pay zakat, I must borrow money to make ends meet. I have no savings.

My question is, is there a nisab for low income people?

This problem has been discussed in details in many talks.

The principle is to take zakat from the the one who is Ghani, that is who has extra money or savings.

Zakat is payable on taxable zakat. If the threshold is too low and one thinks it is unjustified, one may consider his salary below nisab.

The taxes one pays are counted as zakat paid.
