  • Is Covering The Feet Mandatory For Women? Is The Feet Awrah?

Javed Ahmed Ghamidi saheb said in his parda series that covering upto the knees is mandatory for both men and women and this is the minimum. Covering more of the legs is good but not mandatory.

Response to 23 Questions – Part 8 – Veil (Parda) – Javed Ahmed Ghamidi

However, this seems to contradict an authentic narration from the Prophet (PBUH) where he orders women to cover their legs and feet too.

It was narrated that Ibn ‘Umar said:

“The Messenger of Allah [SAW] said: ‘Whoever drags his garment out of pride, Allah will not look at him.’ Umm Salamah said: ‘O Messenger of Allah, what should women do with their hems?’ He said: ‘Let it down a hand span.’ She said: ‘But then their feet will show.’ He said: ‘Let it down a forearm’s length, but no more than that.'”

    Sunan an-Nasa’i 5336

It was narrated from Umm Salamah that:
When the Prophet [SAW] said what he said about the Izar, Umm Salamah said: “What about women?” He said: “Let it down a hand span.” She said: “But then their feet will show.” He said: “Then (let it down) a forearm’s length, but no more than that.”

    Sunan an-Nasa’i 5338

    Other narrations:

    Sunan an-Nasa’i 5337

    Sunan an-Nasa’i 5339

    Sunan Ibn Majah 3580

    Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1731

Doesn’t this sahih hadith make covering the legs and feet mandatory for women too? This contradicts what Javed Ghamidi saheb taught. And he didn’t mention this hadith in his parda series.

This is not a way to determine something mandatory. There is no disagreement in the mainstream scholars that women’s feet are not awrah.

The prophet was satisfying the feelings of umm e salam. She wanted more covering. It was her choice.

But Umm Salama didn’t say only she felt uncomfortable, she said on behalf of all women that their feet will be uncovered. And the Prophet PBUH could have told her that she can cover more if she wanted to but it’s not a rule for every woman, instead he replied to her question which was on behalf of every woman meaning he addressed every woman, right?

It was not on behalf of all women. It was situational. She expressed her preference and the prophet allowed her. This is about allowance. The independent directives of Deen are not instructed this way. Surah Noor verses 30 and 31 delineate the actual directive of dressing with all its details. God has allowed to expose the parts of the body with their adornment (illa ma Zahara minha) which are usually not covered. They include face, hands, and feet essentially.

Once established from the verse, then the traditions are judged in its light. Now, if a woman wants to adopt more covering, she would be ‘allowed’. This allowance does not become an independent ruling.

But in the hadith Umm Salamah said “their feet will show”, not “my feet will show”. If it wasn’t on behalf of all women, then why did she use “their” in her sentence? And why didn’t the Prophet tell her not to worry about other women?

Still, it is her preference for things. Women did not ask her to ask these questions. She was satisfying her preference.

The directives do not come from Hadith. These are the applications of a rule which is given in the Quran or in the Established Sunnah.
