  • Wudu Over Henna That Forms A Thin Layer

Recently the henna that is sold especially for women to design patterns on their hands has additional chemicals in it that give it a stronger smell and a darker colour.

The downside is, this henna seems to be different from the traditional henna in one aspect.

The traditional henna only stains the skin and eventually lightens up over days.

But the henna that is used now leaves a layer on the skin such that after 3-4 days a thin layer can be easily peeled out and below it a light stain remains.

Does this type of henna invalidate wudu as there is a layer over the skin?

Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab ( @Irfan76 ) will hopefully share his juristic insight as soon as he gets a chance.

Whether this layer prevents water from reaching the skin is a technical matter best determined by experts. If it forms a barrier, it would be similar to nail polish in its implications for purification.

There are three main scholarly views:

    1. If the layer blocks water, Wudu and Ghusl are invalid unless it is removed beforehand.

    2. Nail polish is considered part of the hand once applied, so washing the hand with it on still fulfills the requirement.

    3. Analogy with Masah on Socks: One may perform Wudu or Ghusl before applying the polish. For subsequent Wudus, washing over the polish would be sufficient—similar to wiping over socks.
