I heard a hadith that a man did not look at a woman for marriage but Prophet ordered him to look at her. So shouldn’t we lower our gaze.

I do not know the hadith strength so could you tell me. My brain is thinking like why would he look at the woman with desire as the sahaba were great people so there should be another reason

The directive comes directly from the Qur’an, which instructs both men and women to lower their gazes—meaning they should avoid inappropriate, prolonged, or scanning looks at the opposite gender.

The hadith that permits looking at a woman refers specifically to the context of marriage. In that case, a man is allowed to assess physical appearance for the purpose of making a well-informed decision. This allowance is strictly limited to marriage and has nothing to do with casual or habitual glances at women.
