Assalam O Alaikum! It is often said by many scholars that if an individual who is a layman does not do Taqlid will look at different views and end up following his whims and desires. Ghamidi sb in my understanding says people should look at different views. I wanted to ask in the old scholars and Imams did some of them encourage lay men to look at different views and choose between them and do scholars today continue to say so apart from Ghamidi sb. The reason of me asking is that i searched a lot for my research but found most scholars telling me to follow one scholar onlyas a layman and i was unable to find old great Imams sho would tell a layman to look at differing views.

There never was a tradition of following a single authority unless introduced later by some scholars. It was their burden to prove their point that layman should follow a single authority. It is all about administering the masses.

On the other hand the original situation for every Muslim is to use his intellect to decide between opinions to follow. This is his test. If he follows his wishes in his selection he will be answerable to God. If he chooses the easier way, it is what Islam endorses because Deen is easy.

No one has authority to limit man’s freedom of choice which has granted to him by God.

Yes thanks! I just wanted to know if you were aware of some scholars and Imams that allowed laymen to follow using intellect for my essay, i need to argue that it is allowed so i need some scholarly citations. Thanks!
