Is Tawassul Shirk?
I’ve spent quite a lot of time listening to various scholars and speakers on this topic, hoping to find a clear, well-founded explanation, but to be honest, none of them have provided a convincing or proper reason as to why it should be classified as shirk. From what I understand, some people might view it as haram based on their interpretation, and that’s perfectly fine everyone’s entitled to hold differing opinions within the boundaries of scholarly debate.
However, to go as far as labelling it shirk is a very serious matter in Islam, and it demands solid evidence and sound reasoning from authentic sources. Making such a claim without clear, undeniable proof not only creates confusion among the common people but also risks misrepresenting the religion. Sadly, I feel that many of these scholars fall short when it comes to justifying this stance with proper references and logical explanations.
I genuinely want to understand this issue from a fair and balanced perspective. So if anyone can explain to me, with clear evidence and reliable reasoning, why exactly Tawassul is considered shirk, I would truly appreciate it.

There are many types of tawassul, from your question I sense that you are referring to توسل بالذات. Very few scholars call it shirk.
Imam Abu Hanifa deemed it haram!, so did ibn Taymiyyah and the likes of Albani ra.
Regarding categorizing it as shirk only extreme Salafis and “Jamiat Ishaat ut Tawheed” declare it shirk.
Their basis of calling it shirk is 2 folds
1- Thinking the awliya can hear us from here.
(Shirk fil Simaa(
2- Thinking that the awliya have some authority in the matters of God.
These 2 points are extremely valid but those people that use tawassul do not beleive that the awliya are hearing neither do they beleive they can interfere in God’s matters.
It is a separate issue for the extreme sufis, they regard tawassul in the afford mentioned sense.
In some cases it becomes shirk and in other it is not.
