  • Cannibalism Due To Circumstances Acceptable?

    Posted by Sonia on June 11, 2025 at 2:04 pm

    If circumstances are such there is no food — no plants, no animals — and only human bodies, would cannibalism be acceptable according to Islam?

    Situations like these have arises in war zones and after genocides.

    It is already stated in the Qur’an that in the sate of compulsion of desperation to eat a haram food is allowed only to avoid death.

    But the list of haram food doesnt include human beings- hence this question.

    The Quran did not provide a list. The prohibition of eating a human being is beyond question.

    Yes that’s what I meant. Eating a human being is so unacceptable that perhaps even in case of no option it couldn’t be allowed …. there is a list of haram things (flesh of swine, blood, carrion 5:3, 16:115) and what I understand is the exception to eat them in absence of any halal food is restricted just to those foods…. human beings won’t still be permissible even if there is a genocide and there’s nothing to eat. That’s why I asked.

    This list is about the things about which people might get confused could have assumed as halal.

    The puprose of the directive allowing eating haram is save life. It has to be saved even if some other haram is there which is not included in the list. However it is not obligatory to consume haram to save life.

      @Irfan76 sb

      There is a famous case of Cannibalism at sea happened in 1800s.

      Where sailors killed a weak fellow sailor to eat meat and drink blood for survival. In the end because of that 4 sailors survived out of 5.

      How islamic jury will proceed with this case?

      Can a person be killed and consumed to save more lives?

    A person can’t be killed to save one’s life, no matter what. Eating a dead human is allowed as other haram food is allowed in the situation of iztiraar.
