Assalam O Alaikum! Do we have to pay expiation for oath that is a lie about past e.g. i did not do so and so when i did it. And with regards to future oaths we break what can be expiation? Are there more than one method which one can use. How much money to poor would suffice and who would be deserving of money? If expiation is due for multiple oaths must it be given to different people or same?

Expiation is for serious oath only.

You have to provide an average meal or clothing to 10 needy for each oath you broke. If you can’t afford then keep three fasts for each oath.

What about a serious oath about past? That is i did so and so when in fact one did not do it.

Furthermore, what about an oath to keep a secret which one broke by telling that secret to someone else for the sole purpose of Islamic Ruling regarding the matter?

If you have broken a serious oath in the past, you have to atone for it as prescribed.

If it was necessary to break the oath, for some justified reason, even then, you have to expiate it.

What i mean by oath about past is a statement such as “i did not meet a person X in 2024′ when actually i did meet him in 2024 so one did not make an oath for future merely one about a previous act

If this statement was made under a false oath, it constitutes a lie rather than the breaking of an oath. In such a case, you should seek forgiveness from Allah. There is no prescribed expiation for a false oath, but invoking God’s name in vain is not a trivial matter to be overlooked. It is advisable to offer some form of charity as a voluntary expiation.

Regarding expiation sir i am in Azad Kashmir Muzaffarabad Pakistan.Rather than feeding poor can i give them money? How much to give to each poor? And if i can afford to give money do i still have choice to keep fasts instead?

If you can afford to feed the poor or give them clothing, you can’t keep fast.

This is the average meals of the day, or average clothing, or give money in their stead.
