  • What Needs To Be Covered Under Zeenat Covering & What Is Exempted?

Posted by Saba Bilal on June 29, 2025 at 8:19 am

Does only the Zeenat of the area need to be covered ( like chest covered by duppatta when wearing necklace) or when Zeenat is done in any area , all areas except “those that are apparent” need to be covered ( ex- wearing necklace, so duppatta covering necklace but also full sleeves and hair covered?). Sorry if this seems like a silly question, but my concepts have gotten muddy after watching a video.

    1) Both the men and women present should restrain their gazes.

    2) One must properly guard one’s sexual organs on such occasions of interaction.

    3) It is necessary for women in particular not to display any of their embellishments except before their close relatives, attendants and people of acquaintance. However, exempted from this are embellishments adorned on limbs which are generally never covered: ie. the jewellery and make-up worn on the hand, the face and the feet. Therefore, barring the embellishments worn on these places, women must hide the ones worn in all other places and for this, they should place their shawls over their necks. So much so, in the presence of men, they should not walk by striking their feet in a manner which draws attention to any hidden embellishments they may be wearing. On these very grounds, the Prophet (sws) bade women not to use strong perfumes when they go out.

Relatives and people of acquaintance before which the above mentioned display of ornaments is not forbidden are:

    i. Husband

    ii. Father

    iii. Father-in-law

    iv. Sons

    v. Sons of the Husband

    vi. Brothers

    vii. Brothers Sons

    viii. Sisters Sons

ix. Women of acquaintance and Maids

    x. Slaves

xi. People who live in a house as dependents and because of their subservience or owing to any other reason are incapable of feeling any attraction towards women.

xii. Children who are as yet unaware of sexual matters.

If there is no Zeenat on hair, then there is no obligation to cover your hair.

However it is encouraged to cover head even when the head is not adorned. Please see the article below:

    __

“The Almighty requires of a Muslim woman to not display her make-up or other embellishments such as jewellery before unknown men except what she has adorned her hands, feet and face with. The Qur’an has made it mandatory upon Muslim women to follow this directive. It is for this very reason that the tradition of wearing the head-scarf or head covering while going out of the house was established, and now has become a part of Islamic culture. Even if women have not embellished themselves and have not put on make-up, they have continued to be very vigilant in wearing some sort of head covering. This attitude has also sprung forth from the insinuations of the Qur’an: the Almighty has specified that the directive of covering the chest and neckline with a covering is not related to old women who have passed their marriageable age on the condition that their intention is not to show off their ornaments. The Qur’an says that they can take off this covering before men and that there is no harm in this; however, it has simultaneously stated that what is more desirable in the sight of the Almighty is that they should be careful in this matter too and not take their coverings off their chests. It is evident from this that regarding the head too it is desirable in the sight of the Almighty that even if women have not adorned it in any way, even then they should not take off their head coverings. Although covering the head is not mandatory yet when Muslim women live with a concern for religiosity and try to draw near God, they necessarily take this precaution, and never like to come before unknown men bare-headed”.

I mean, u could wear thicker duppattas or skip the necklaces if u have a thin one, maybe even fold a thin duppatta to make it more opaque or just use a scarf if you cover your hair.

If someone is not wearing jewelry around the neck but their clothes have embellishments or embroidery on them, is it also necessary to cover that? And if there is embroidery on the neckline itself, does that also need to be covered?
