  • Women Who Would Be Dressed But Appear To Be Naked

AbU Huraira reported Allah’s Messenger (ﷺ) having said this: Two are the types of the denizens of Hell whom I did not see: people having flogs like the tails of the ox with them and they would be beating people, and the women who would be dressed but appear to be naked, who would be inclined (to evil) and make their husbands incline towards it. Their heads would be like the humps of the bukht camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Paradise and they would not smell its odour whereas its odour would be smelt from such and such distance.

    Sahih Muslim 2128

Abu Hurairah (May Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said, “There are two types of people who will be punished in Hell and whom I have not seen: men having whips like the tails of cows and they will be beating people with them, and, women who will be dressed but appear to be naked, inviting to evil; and they themselves will be inclined to it. Their heads will appear like the humps of the Bactrian camel inclined to one side. They will not enter Jannah and they will not smell its fragrance which is perceptible from such and such a distance.” [Muslim].

I want to confirm my understanding of the content of the two hadiths that are the same. in the first sentence of both hadiths it is clearly about a person who tortures others with a whip, this can be found in ancient people who treated their slaves with whips so that they would obey their masters.

In the second person it describes a woman who is dressed but naked and invites others in the wrong direction. The woman described in this hadith is about a woman who uses indecent clothing to lead someone towards adultery.

    Is my understanding correct, sir?

    Your understanding is correct.

In the first case, the warning also applies to other oppressors, who use illegitimate force upon others, whether in the form of a whip or otherwise.

I see….Sir, I would like to ask again. In the second person it is mentioned that the woman wears indecent clothing to lead someone towards adultery, this is obviously a woman who works in a prostitution place or something similar. So what about a woman who wears indecent clothing without any intention of leading to adultery? Does it fall into the category of sadd-e-zariya? Or is it the same even though it does not lead to adultery?

Its not the same. Dressing may be inappropriate and there could be room for improvement, but a woman who does so to lure others fall within purview of this narration.

I see… but sir, how can we determine whether she is trying to lure men or not? Because in my opinion, even if you wear just a normal clothes you can still to lure men.

It is not for us to decide that. Let God decide these matters. It is between her and God.

I understand, this is based on the woman’s intentions, right, sir?

Since this is only between her and Allah, it means that it is not visual appearance that matters, but rather the intention behind her behaviour. Is that correct, sir?

This hadith talks about a specific visual appearance based on specific intentions. Such Ahadith were said by the prophet to make that particular group of people i.e. women more conscious about such matters. Such ahadith are not said to us i.e. men to make judgements about women in this world.

As for Visual appearance alone, which is not a topic of this question, Quran Surah Nur gives Norms of Gender interaction where it becomes clear what kind of dress is obligatory for both men and women, what kind of dress is recommended or encouraged and what kind is optional and what additional requirements are asked of women.

Excuse me, sir, if I appear to be rude, but I would like to ask another question.

In the West, there are female models who wear bikinis to promote bikini clothing. Do these women fall under this hadith?
