Currently my dad is in the ICU after a bypass. He’s 82 year old, his recovery has been nothing but with complications. Currently he’s on ventilator and dialysis.

My question is…even if doctors manage to save his life the long term implications will be that he might be disabled unable to walk and eat. He would have to kept at a nursing house. He will most likely always be on a ventilator as well.

His current condition in the ICU is that he’s too weak and doctors want to know how much should they go for supporting his life. Like continue providing medications and ventilator and dialysis?he does respond minor and does node his head and sometimes open his eyes to look at us and smile.

But we cant see him in pain? If the recovery with long term implication is life of disability, is it worth keep going?

It doesn’t answer my question…after recovery is permanent disability to even move and staying in nursing house? Is that considered ilaaj?

If recovery is possible, even slow, then it is considered ilaaj (treatment). When the expected recovery stage is reached as per the doctors or if the recovery/cure is not possible altogether, then the patient should be not unnecessarily kept alive on a life support. In such instances, life support should be removed.

Disability is not a reason to remove life support. It is the exhaustion of treatment which determines whether or not life support should be removed.

Since this is a highly sensitive matter. I will request Dr. Irfan Shahzad Sahab ( @Irfan76 ) to share his ruling as soon as he gets a chance.
