Quran 17:38 – How To Understand In The Context Of Current Technological Advances
Assalamualaikum!
In Surah Bani Israel Verse 38, Allah swt orders human beings to walk with humility and show no arrogance in gesture.
The reason he gives is that neither humans can tear the Earth surface nor reach the heights of mountains.
But both of these things have been achieved through great leaps in technology.
We tear the earth to extract minerals etc using powerful machines.
We’ve climbed up to reach the highest mountains. Also, we’ve constructed buildings much higher than many mountains, though still smaller than many others.
How else to understand this verse then?

It is about the powerlessness of the human beings in their human capacity when compared to the vastness of the earth and the mountains. It is not like human beings are flying like a superman from one mountain to another or tearing up earth from one place to another. Despite technological advancements, after a certain depth, we cannot go further down the earth. Same for the mountains, it’s not like everyone is climbing them everyday. It is a risky adventure, requiring technical skill and is done with external help like guides, gadgets and supplemental oxygen. The skyscrapers, indeed eye catching, are still susceptible to a moderate to high magnitude earthquake. All of this, even in the face of whatever progress we have made, in the end reminds us of how powerless we are when faced with the power of planet in which we live. A small mistake or a mishap can cost us our lives and no technology can save us from that. So what reason are we left with to be arrogant? what all this should do, is instill humility within us instead.
