  • Is Intentionally Skipping Friday Prayer For Mental Health Permissible?

The mosque near my home has a very angry Imam. He screams and shouts in the sermons, and the things he says aren’t pleasant to listen to. For example he says derogatory things about women who do not wear burka, makes derogatory remarks about musicians, yells about national holidays and cultural celebrations being haram and no Muslim should celebrate them, about men and women interacting in public places and many other things. When I listen to his sermon my day gets ruined, his vitriol filled speech keeps ringing in my ear all day long and I can’t concentrate on other works.

Not going to lie, I’m currently going through kind of a crisis of faith and his yelling and venom filled speech takes a heavy toll on my mental health. His sermon makes me feel more distant to Islam, gives me a feeling like I don’t belong here. When I watch Javed Ahmed Ghamidi’s videos I feel a state of tranquillity, but when I listen to that Imam and many other traditional Moulanas I get a turmoil inside me. I don’t find any interest in going to the mosque, I don’t want to pray behind a man like him who harbours so much hatred.

Would it be permissible for me to intentionally skip going to the mosque during Friday and pray at home instead?
