    Assalam o Alaikum,

I run a short-term rental (Airbnb) where families, solo travelers, and couples book. To keep my earnings halal and avoid wrong activities, I made this rule:

If an unmarried couple is from the same city (e.g. Karachi), I don’t allow them, because usually their purpose is not genuine.

If an unmarried couple is from another city or abroad, I allow them, because their main purpose is accommodation or a place to stay.

    My questions are:

    1. Islamically, is it permissible to rent out to unmarried couples (local or from outside)?

    2. If they do anything wrong inside, am I sinful or not responsible?

If I completely ban local unmarried couples from coming then I find hypocrisy allowing abroad unmarried couples. But if I also ban international unmarried couples too, I lose a big number of customers.

Please guide me according to Shariah so I can run my business in a halal way.

You are not responsible for what others do. For example, a man cannot make a rule to sell mobile phones to only those who promise not to use them for anything wrong. You just rent out, let others do what they do, God will judge them.

I understand your point here, but for example a unmarried couples rents my place, isn’t that obvious what they are planning to do?

Not judging anyone or not making presumptions but it is what it is.

You are indeed renting for good sake but directly or indirectly you become a facilitator.

    Expecting your guidance.

Again, you are not responsible for what others do. Still, if you think you should not facilitate an unmarried couple, you may refuse them.
