Salam guys, I just watched Ghamdi Saabs 23 questions videos in regards to the beard. There was one key theme/ question that wasn’t touched on so I wanted to see if anyone can help me. Generally his reason made a lot sense and mostly resonated with me.

However, he didn’t mention as why didn’t the Immediate generation after the sahaba ( the taibeen , major scholars like Imam Abu hanif and their students) agree or say anything Ghamdi Saab about the beard. They all seemed to think the prophet PBUH was giving a religious command and wasn’t merely guiding people away from arrogant ways of being. They considered it sinful in gods law to cut anything under one fist. I can’t seem to make sense of this, they were from the immediate followers. It’s almost inconceivable they could have got basic knowledge like this wrong?

Despite an apparent consensus, at the core, it is a matter of interpretation (feham) based on certain Hadith narrations. In matters of understanding, even interpretation of Sahaba can be argued against, on the basis of arguments. Just the way Sahaba and early scholars agreed on many interpretations, similarly they disagreed on several. And matters of interpretation should always be approached through academic route and not through an emotional route.
