When I was a child I often used to fight with my cousin in some cases even backbite about him because of our fights now many years later we are at very good terms and both have grown up now however I often suffer from thoughts saying that I should apologize to him for backbiting about him back then since for forgiveness for those sins I would need to ask forgiveness from him first however I feel like these thoughts are just whispers from shaytan and I don’t really need to do that since both of us don’t really care about the fights we used to have and I would feel very weird bringing such things up again. Do I need to seek forgiveness for backbiting, from the person who I’ve backbited about even if those things don’t matter anymore to the person and please keep in mind my cousin doesn’t know I used to do this but none of what happened back then matters now to either of us. Could someone please also clarify if telling a person is mandatory if they do not know you backbited about them even if telling them won’t worsen the situation.
