Owning Something That Might Be Considered A Status Symbol
Is owning something that might be considered a status symbol haram? For example owning something like an iPhone or any other expensive phone is seen as a status symbol in some areas of Pakistan so would it be haram to own such a thing even if you can afford it since it is a status symbol can’t you just own the phone because you like it and it is a good product. Since owning such a phone is a status symbol would you need to purposefully buy a comparatively worse product. The same goes for something like cars owning a good car can also be considered a status symbol so does that mean you can’t own a nice car ? If you can afford something and your not buying it just because it’s a status symbol rather it is something that meets your needs can it be bought ?

God has told us in the Qur’an 7:33 that the beauties of life have been created for His people. The prophet once asked a man who was not wearing good clothes whether he had some wealth or not. he said he had, the prophet advised him to wear good clothes to show his gratitude to God for the blessings He gave him.
There are different status of people in the society. It is a fact and has it’s reflections which are not haram. It only the arrogance which reflect in behaviour that has to be avoided.
