  • Question About "prasad"

Posted by Deleted User 3668 on October 20, 2025 at 9:42 am

    Assalamu Alaikum Ghamidi Sahab,
I live in India where many of my friends, classmates and neighbours are Hindu. During their festivals — like Diwali and Holi — they perform religious rituals at home and place sweets and other food items in front of the idol as offerings. Often some sweets are left right next to the idol (unwrapped), while others are packed. Sometimes they take the packed sweets and offer them to us.
I have a few related questions and would be grateful for your guidance:
    1. Is it permissible for a Muslim to accept and eat sweets that were placed as offerings in front of a Hindu idol? Does it make a difference between unwrapped sweets left directly beside the idol and factory-packed sweets that are later distributed?

    2. If accepting such food is not permitted, what is the recommended practical course of action in a polite, respectful way that preserves friendship and neighbourly relations? Should one refuse, explain, or return the food?

    3. If one feels uncomfortable accepting the offered food, is it acceptable to place it somewhere else (for example give it to an animal or dispose of it), or would it be better to refuse politely? Are there any ethical or religious considerations we should keep in mind about wasting food?

    4. Could you please provide the Islamic reasoning or textual evidence (Qur’an/Hadith/fiqh principles) behind your guidance so that I can explain it respectfully to friends if needed?

JazakAllahu khairan for your time and guidance.

Eating any meal dedicated to a deity other than Allah is prohibited in Islam. We are not allowed to eat it, no matter if they are wrapped separately or not. We should convey our sensitivities to our friends in a polite way and mostly, rational people do understand and respect these religious sensitivities. In extreme cases, to keep others heart, we can take such sweets just as a token of appreciation and feed them either to animals or give them to other non-muslims.

We cannot participate in polytheistic rituals. Other than that, participating in social aspects of such gatherings is fine.

Better ask your friends beforehand what polytheistic ritual in their religion is and what is not.

Check karlain kai Allah kai naam pai diya jaa raha hai khana ya nhi. Agar Allah kai naam pai hai toh khana Halal hai aur agar nhi hai toh Khana Haram hai.
