What is the rationale behind nikha? What is nikha? How is intimacy between two individuals made legitimate by merely uttering few Quranic verses? Or the pledge between two individuals make their intimacy legitimate?

It is social contract, announcing in public that they are going to live together as ordained by God. This announcement impose social obligation on each other which become legally and socially binding

Nikah is a sacred marriage contract in Islam that makes the relationship between a man and a woman lawful in the eyes of Allah. It’s not just about reciting a few verses but about a mutual agreement (Ijab and Qabul), witnesses, and mahr (bridal gift), which make intimacy legitimate. The purpose of nikah is to build a bond of love, mercy, and faith within a lawful framework—just as learning from a Quran teacher ensures proper understanding and practice of Allah’s words.

So a pledge between a bf and gf can be regarded as a formal nikha cuz it also involves loyalty and secrecy? 🤔🤔

Nikah is a contract between a man and a woman where they both agree to live life together exclusively as a couple for the rest of their lives, and the man takes responsibility to provide for the financial needs of a woman. This needs to be announced publicly/openly. If a bf and gf do the same, then they are husband and wife.
