I don’t find interest in nafl when it comes to prayer or fasting (I do offer tahajud, keep 3 – 4 fasts per month, offer some more prayer in times when I feel like it beyond the fard parts) and don’t want to do these intensively as nafl.

But I still want to attain the highest level of heaven. I do find interest in creativity, and helping the people and the planet through solving problems, bringing advancements to the world, sharing knowledge, doing scientific research and making things that benefit (including volunteer work such as websites and apps for charities) others, and then help the needy and poor from my earnings, etc. for the sake of doing the things that are beyond the obligatory part of religion.

Is it possible to earn highest level of heaven doing this? By just focusing on things that I am interested in and benefiting others instead of extensively offering prayer and fasting? I don’t want to offer extra prayers or fast, I want to use my time in doing things that I love doing out of interest but still don’t want to compromise on earning extra deeds.

People have different tendencies, and everyone has a chance to become the highest achiever. The prophet is reported to have said:

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that Allah’s Messenger ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: One who makes efforts (for earning to be spent) on a widow and the destitute is like a striver in the cause of Allah, and I think he also said: He is like one who constantly stands for prayer and observes fast without breaking it. (Muslim 2982)

And what about the harsh / painful tests that a believer goes through patiently for years or even decades? Do those also only get you into heaven or also raise your status / reward from the normal level of heaven?

In order to achieve the highest ranks, one should strive to achieve the pinnacle of morality. It is not always about prayers and fasting, there are other numerous things, including patience, which can help person achieve such higher ranks. Please see for details:
