We often hear debates about whether rafa yadain should or should not be done but barely anyone explains what the act of raising both hands is supposed to symbolise.
I have heard passing remarks that it means surrender or somehow is symbolic of greatness but I no source is cited or explanation provided.

It was a gesture to detach oneself from something or someone. It is done to enter the prayer to detaching from other things.
