  • Praying Dua-e-maghfirat For A Non-muslim

There is a person who has been very close to my heart and died around 4 years ago at age of 92. I once heard through Christian reverted Islamic scholar that he can’t pray for his father because his father was Christian and he said that Islam doesn’t allow us to do Dua of forgiveness for non-Muslim. I don’t know whether is this the correct rule of Islam or not whether does Islam allows to do Dua forgiveness for non-Muslims or not but my question is regarding the person who was very close to my heart and is dead. I am myself have lived with him for my past life and I know this that he never ever got to know Allah or Islam the only thing that he just knew was the name of Allah and some local Peer sahab who was already died and that person used to call that dead peer shb for asking help and asking for Dua to that peer instead of Allah and another thing that I knew that he was even told wrong Qalma i.e 1st Qalma tayyaba which isn’t found in entire Quran and according to my knowledge our profit told us only one Qalma which is qalma shahadat. So that person even didn’t learnt the true qalma, he didn’t know how to pray Namaz, neither memorized any Quran sorah nor even know about basics of Islam like roza etc. Nothing, would that guy be considered as non-Muslim and if he is considered as non-Muslim can I pray for his forgiveness?

God will judge every person with justice.

We cannot decide on our own whether a person does not deserve God’s mercy. God knows the best. In such cases the prayer of the Prophet Ibrahim guides us:

    فَمَن تَبِعَنِي فَإِنَّهُ مِنِّي ۖ وَمَنْ عَصَانِي فَإِنَّكَ غَفُورٌ رَّحِيمٌ

so, he [among them] who follows me, is mine and he who disobeyed me, his matter is consigned to you. Then You are Forgiving and Ever-Merciful. (14: 36)

Yes, you can, following the same example, the forgive him, if he has any excuse to present.
